Urban Oasis: High-Rise Balcony & Apartment Modernization

In the heart of Vancouver, Owl Construction undertook a unique project in a bustling high-rise building. Our clients sought to transform their apartment, particularly their underutilized balcony, into a true urban oasis – a space that offered both a serene escape and a vibrant connection to the city below. This project presented distinct challenges inherent to high-rise renovations, from logistical constraints to specific building regulations, all of which Owl Construction navigated with precision and expertise. Our goal was to not only update the aesthetics but to fundamentally enhance the functionality and comfort of both the indoor and outdoor living areas.

The Balcony: Elevating Outdoor Living

The original balcony was an uninspired concrete slab, failing to capitalize on the apartment's spectacular panoramic views. Our vision was to create a harmonious extension of the indoor living space, a private sky-high retreat.

• Structural & Material Selection: Working within strict building codes and structural limitations, we designed a custom decking system using high-quality, weather-resistant composite materials. This ensured durability against the elements while providing a warm, inviting aesthetic underfoot. The chosen material also required minimal maintenance, a key consideration for high-rise living.

• Safety & Aesthetics: The existing railing was upgraded to a sleek, frameless glass system. This critical change immediately opened up the views, creating an unobstructed visual flow from the apartment to the cityscape. We carefully selected glass that met all safety standards while offering superior clarity.

• Integrated Features: To maximize the compact space, we incorporated built-in, low-profile seating with hidden storage, optimized for comfort and practicality. Strategic, subtle LED strip lighting was installed beneath the railings and integrated into the seating, creating an inviting ambiance for evening relaxation without light pollution. Drought-resistant, low-maintenance planters were chosen to add a touch of greenery, perfectly suited for the elevated environment. The result is a sophisticated outdoor room that feels both private and expansive.
